PBRCC Legislative Summit

Friday, January 30 from 8am-12pm

The Farmstead Event & Conference Center 399 Commercial St, Rockport, Maine 04856

How can YOU gain better access to, and stay apprised of, the legislation that affects you and your business? The Penobscot Bay Regional Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a Legislative Breakfast, proudly sponsored by Bangor Savings Bank, with the Maine State Chamber at the Farmstead Event Center on Jan 30 from 8 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Chamber member, Megunticook Market, will be providing breakfast.

Peter Gore, Vice President of Government Relations at the Maine State Chamber of Commerce, will kick off the morning with a discussion on how area businesses can play a more active and involved role in the legislative process within Maine and nationally. The question to be tackled: "How can you, as a business owner, gain better access to, and stay apprised of, legislation that affects you and your business?" “The idea is that we are connecting business to what they need to know to advocate for themselves and their industry, discussions about the economy, viewpoints of 2014 and what to expect for 2015,” states Staci Coomer, Executive Director of the Penobscot Bay Regional Chamber of Commerce. “They may not be aware of issues that can affect their business, or that can help them. As a chamber, it is great for us to get a pulse on the priority issues and trends that make an impact in our region.” $25 for Members and $30 for Non Members

Strand Theatre, 345 Main Street, Rockland, ME 04841

Four decades into a stellar career, folk singer/songwriter JONATHAN EDWARDS delivers songs of passion, insight, and humor with his pure and powerful tenor. His repertoire includes such classics as “Honky Tonk Stardust Cowboy,” “Sometimes,” “One Day Closer,” “Don’t Cry Blue,” “Emma,” “Everybody Knows Her,” “Athens County,” and the 1971 anthemic “Sunshine (Go Away Today),” the protest proclamation that resonated with thousands of young fans. EDWARDS has released 15 albums, including the bluegrass “Blue Ridge,” and his collection of children’s songs, “Little Hands.” Folk singer/songwriter CHERYL WHEELER is a natural storyteller with a beautiful voice; though her songs are often emotional portraits of people, her live concerts also include comic routines and serious discussions. A gifted writer, WHEELER'S songs have been covered by artists as diverse as Dan Seals, Peter Paul and Mary, Kenny Loggins, Garth Brooks, Suzy Boggus, Melanie, Bette Midler, Maura O'Connell, Sylvia, Kathy Mattea, and Holly Near. “The Fastest Bicycle rider in the World: Major Taylor’s Legacy Picks Up Speed.”

February 21, 2015; 1:00 p.m.

Owls Head Transportation Museum 117 Museum St. Owls Head, ME 04854

On Saturday, February 21st at 1:00 p.m., Lynn Tolman will present “The Fastest Bicycle rider in the World: Major Taylor’s Legacy Picks Up Speed.” When automobiles and aviation were in their infancy, bicycles were the fastest thing going. And the fastest cyclist of all was Major Taylor, "the Worcester Whirlwind." But as a black man in an increasingly segregated society, he had to fight Jim Crow just to get on the starting line. Journalist Lynne Tolman tells the story of Major Taylor's remarkable life on and off the racetracks of the world at the turn of the 20th century, and how his legacy is shaping cycling today.

March 3, 2015; 1:00 p.m.

Strand Theatre, 345 Main Street, Rockland, ME 04841

Captured-Live HD broadcast from New York’s Metropolitan Opera. Netrebko stars as the beautiful blind girl who experiences love for the first time in Iolanta, while Nadja Michael is the unwitting victim of the diabolical Bluebeard, played by Mikhail Petrenko. Both operas are directed by Mariusz Trelinski, who was inspired by classic noir films of the 1940s. Iolanta also stars Piotr Beczala, and Valery Gergiev conducts both operas.
