Chambernomics: information for Chamber members

Thursday, May 9, 2013 - 9:21pm

The Penobscot Bay Regional Chamber of Commerce would like to give kudos to the City of Rockland and the Town of Rockport for taking a moment to sit back and look to the future.

Community and Economic Development is often a tricky thing.  So many factors can come into play, such as: zoning, community culture, money, and vision on the part of the citizens, the government, developers, and job creators.  History has shown that often, those various parts of the equation don’t fall into place in the right order, and a worthwhile project will grind to a halt.  Some projects will recover, some will falter, and importantly, some may never see the light of day.

Through a collaboration with each other, and aided by Friends of Midcoast Maine, the two...

If you know which Museum in Rockland offers 20,000 square feet of gallery space and over 10,000 works in its collection; which event serves over 20,000 lbs of lobster each year; or where you can see the finest collection of pioneer-era aircraft and automobiles in the world, then your community needs you!

In just two to four hours a week you can share your local knowledge, be part of a wonderful group of community-minded local residents, and get to talk with visitors from all over the globe from the centrally located Chamber of Commerce office in the Maine Lighthouse Museum building in Rockland.

Please contact the Chamber at 236-4404 or 596-0376 for more information on how you can volunteer.

Classes will be held around the state to help employers get ready for summer hiring

The Maine Department of Labor will hold free classes in four cities to help educate employers and the public about the regulations governing the workplace.  The Laws Governing Workplace Rights classes will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at each location.

The classes, taught by staff of the Wage and Hour Division of the Bureau of Labor Standards, will take place on May 15 in Saco, May 16 in Bangor, May 20 in Lewiston, and June 14 in Portland.

“These free classes can help businesses understand the law,” said Governor Paul R. LePage. “Compliance saves businesses and the state time and money, and this allows Maine’s employers to become more efficient in...

The U.S. Department of Labor has mandated that benefit cuts be implemented no later than June 30, 2013, in a manner that achieves an overall savings of 10.7 percent of benefits for federal fiscal year 2013, which ends September 30, 2013. The U.S. Department of Labor mandated specific ways for states to achieve the savings, letting states choose from a limited set of options.

Under the option Maine has chosen to implement, EUC Tier 3 benefit duration will be reduced by eight weeks, leaving one week of benefit eligibility in Tier 3. The reduction is effective the week of May 12, and about 1,100 of the 5,800 individuals currently collecting EUC benefits will not be eligible for additional benefits beginning that week.  Thereafter, the number of beneficiaries exhausting...

Dear Members:

As you are aware, changes were made to our dues and advertising structure when the “old” PBR and CRL Chambers consolidated in 2011. It was a complex formula, and we thank you all for your patience as we continue to work our way through the process.

We are now a year and half out from that consolidation, and we are revisiting some areas of the dues structure to simplify our forms and create an easier process for renewing Business Members as well as for new Business Members as they come on board. We will be addressing all segments of our membership over the coming months, and will be reviewing our dues structure/enhanced listing pricing relative to our other membership categories of Non-Profit Organizations, Municipal Organizations,...

We are in the midst of the design of the up-coming REDAC Workshop that will be on Wednesday, March 27, immediately following the 4 p.m. REDAC meeting. I expect the meeting will actually start around 5:30 and run until 7:30.  There will be some food and beverages available.

Next week, I will send out a detailed agenda prepared by the group working on the design of the workshop. We need at least 8 REDAC members to help facilitate small groups so I hope everyone can assist. The packet we send will include facilitator information.  Needless to say, it will be a very interactive workshop with assistance from our consultant Terry Dewan and others but your help is essential.

We will also send out a press release about the workshop so the public knows about...

Whether your business will be tabling at the Pen Bay Regional Chamber of Commerce’s Business and Community Expo on March 20 or another tradeshow, product show, wedding show etc. - we would like to offer some tips to get the most out of your experience:

Before the Expo:
